If you don't have space in your inventory, you cannot use a single-use item that you've just gained. You can use a different item in your inventory in order to make room for the new item, but if an item is not in your inventory, it cannot be used.
Note that instant rewards are not items and do not require space in your inventory. These rewards are gained immediately when you defeat the enemy they are printed on.
